Biography
Hank Green, a biochemist, writer, vlogger, and musician based in Montana, first gained widespread notice through his satirical songs that often centered on scientific topics, along with his regular appearances alongside brother John Green in an online video series. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, he spent his childhood in Florida before completing a biochemistry degree at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg and later obtaining a master’s in environmental studies at the University of Montana. During his student years he contributed frequent pieces to outlets including Mental Floss and launched the science-focused blog EcoGeek, eventually expanding it into a complete publication. The project that truly introduced him to a broad audience was the 2007 video series Brotherhood 2.0, originally conceived as a twelve-month experiment in which he and his brother would exchange messages exclusively through online uploads. Its inventive, frequently comedic format—built around assorted games, regulations, and tasks—quickly attracted thousands of viewers on YouTube, prompting the siblings to extend their vlogging indefinitely. One of the series’ challenges inspired Green to begin posting original songs every two weeks. His first full-length release, the 2008 album So Jokes, appeared on Billboard’s Top 25 list of revenue-generating online albums. Subsequent projects included the 2009 live recording I’m So Bad at This: Live!, the studio effort This Machine Pwns n00bs that same year, Ellen Hardcastle in 2011, and Tour de Nerdfighting in 2012. Green resurfaced in 2014 with Incongruent, his fifth solo album and the first to showcase his supporting ensemble, the Perfect Strangers.
