Biography
Born in Denmark in 1945, Poulsen ranks among Australia’s under-recognized figures from the close of the 1960s. His work mirrored the era’s hippie ethos and alternative culture. Gifted with a playful sensibility, he fashioned irresistibly catchy tunes without apparent effort and received commissions to compose material for established pop acts, among them John Farnham. The 1972 follow-up Lost & Found failed to match the sales of its predecessor Natural High, the album that housed the chart success “Boom Sha La La Lo.” Throughout the remainder of the decade he journeyed internationally while contending with cancer that imperiled his professional future. Although he appeared sporadically on stage, Poulsen issued no further recordings during the 1980s or 1990s aside from a handful of children’s-song collections.
