Heartland originated in Alabama when vocalist Jason Albert joined forces with guitarist Craig Anderson and drummer Todd Anderson. The lineup expanded to six members upon the addition of lead guitarist Mike Myerson, bassist Keith West, and fiddler Chuck Crawford. Drawing from a wide array of sources including Johnny Cash, AC/DC, Alabama, Sam Cooke, Van Halen, Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, and the Beach Boys, the ensemble built a dedicated local audience in the Huntsville area through energetic performances. Lofton Creek Records took notice, leading to a deal with the Nashville-based independent label. The group then tracked material at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals under the guidance of producer Walt Aldridge, resulting in the release of the single "I Loved Her First" during 2006. Penned by Aldridge alongside Elliott Park, this touching ballad explores a father's affection for his daughter and appears poised to endure as a staple at country nuptial celebrations and gatherings indefinitely. The full-length release bearing the same title arrived subsequently that year. Early 2009 saw the departure of Mike Myerson, after which the band proceeded with five musicians.
