Biography
Bryan White's commanding vocals, relaxed stage presence, and sleek country-pop sound slotted neatly into the post-Garth Brooks environment that dominated the mid-nineties. His self-titled debut launched a run of chart-topping singles that continued through 1996.
Born and raised in Oklahoma City, White entered music early. Both parents worked as local professionals; at five, his father introduced him to drums. As a teenager he performed in his mother's rock & roll band and his father's country outfit, acquiring wide-ranging experience. He later started his own trio, initially handling drums until his mother overheard him sing "Stand By Me" during a sound check. Moved to tears, she urged him to sing lead. White quickly added guitar and began composing.
After high-school graduation he moved to Nashville and connected with family friend Billy Joe Walker, Jr., a Music City session musician. Over the next two years Walker refined White's material and secured him work as a demo vocalist. Producer Kyle Lehning, previously associated with Randy Travis and Dan Seals, joined the collaboration. Together the three shaped White's Asylum debut, which arrived in 1994.
The first singles, "Eugene You Genius" and "Look At Me Know," made little impact, the latter reaching only number 24. In spring 1995 "Someone Else's Star" climbed to number one, followed by "Rebecca Lynn" that fall. Between Now and Forever appeared in spring 1996, led by the chart-topping "I'm Not Supposed to Love You Anymore." "So Much for Pretending" extended the streak to four consecutive number-one singles by fall 1996. That same season White received the Country Music Association's Horizon Award and its Best New Touring Artist honor. The Right Place followed in 1997; two years later he returned with How Lucky I Am. His first holiday project, Dreaming of Christmas, surfaced in 1999. Warner Bros. assembled his four number-one hits alongside several other Top 20 tracks for a Greatest Hits collection issued in late 2000.
