Mark Wills never matched the commercial impact or widespread recognition enjoyed by new country figures like Tim McGraw and Clay Walker, yet his self-titled debut album from 1996 still built him a loyal audience and drew positive critical notices. Growing up in the small Georgia town of Blue Ridge, he developed an early passion for pop-metal acts such as Poison and Bon Jovi, performing with garage bands throughout his teenage years. Over time his preferences evolved toward country-pop and new traditionalist sounds, a shift that aligned naturally with his childhood experiences singing country music at home and in church. At seventeen he entered a talent contest at the Buckboard Country Music Showcase in nearby Marietta, taking first place and earning regular weekly slots at the venue. For the next five years he appeared there five nights each week while also cutting demo recordings around Atlanta, gradually extending his work into Nashville sessions. During one Buckboard performance he caught the attention of Carson Chamberlain and Keith Stegall, who arranged a deal with Mercury Nashville. The pair produced his 1996 debut, which arrived that autumn and reached number 38 on the country albums chart. Wish You Were Here appeared two years later, and in early 2000 he delivered Permanently.
