David Lee Murphy first rose to prominence in the mid-'90s through a refined fusion of neo-traditional country elements and mainstream rock touches that turned the singer into a commercial force. He arrived in Nashville during 1983 intent on building a career, yet spent the next decade refining his skills in Music City without drawing notice from record executives. Recognition finally arrived locally by the start of the following decade, leading to a 1992 contract with MCA Records. His earliest release appeared on the soundtrack for the Luke Perry rodeo film Eight Seconds.

The debut full-length Out with a Bang reached stores in the first months of 1995. Its track “Party Crowd” logged the highest country-radio airplay of that year, while the follow-up single “Dust on the Bottle” held the top chart position for a pair of weeks. The album earned platinum certification and stood as the top-selling debut by any male country artist throughout 1995; the Academy of Country Music placed Murphy among the nominees for Top New Male Vocalist.

His sophomore effort, Gettin' Out the Good Stuff, arrived in summer 1996 and proved less commercially potent, though the single “The Road You Leave Behind” climbed to number 14. One further MCA project, We Can't All Be Angels, surfaced in 1997 and yielded modest chart entries with “All Lit Up in Love” and “Just Don't Wait Around 'til She's Leavin'” before the label parted ways with the artist.

Koch Entertainment issued Tryin' to Get There in 2004, after which Murphy gradually stepped back from performing across the ensuing decade to emphasize songwriting. Numerous country performers cut his material during the next fifteen years; Kenny Chesney delivered the first major success by sending “Living in Fast Forward” to number one in 2006. Additional recordings came from Blake Shelton, Gary Allan, Blackberry Smoke, and Jake Owen, while Jason Aldean supplied the second chart-topper with “Big Green Tractor” in 2009.

Murphy resumed recording activity in 2018 by joining Reviver Records for the Kenny Chesney– and Buddy Cannon–produced album No Zip Code. In 2021 he joined Shy Carter on the single “Beer with My Friends,” which also featured Cole Swindell, and appeared alongside ERNEST, HARDY, and Ben Burgess on the collaborative track “Red Dirt Clouds.”
