Heather Duby grew up with an aunt who trained racehorses and briefly imagined herself becoming a jockey. Like many teenagers shaped by the 1970s, she later embraced the music of the Cure and Joy Division. She began composing her own material, emphasizing melody and taking pleasure in the process. In 1994 she departed Portland for Seattle, where she pursued music seriously while enrolled at Evergreen College in Olympia. There she encountered producer Steve Fisk. After finishing her studies, she and Fisk prepared her debut release, Post to Wire, which appeared on Sub Pop in 1999. Two years afterward she moved away from her earlier smoky pop approach to collaborate with Elemental on the sleek electronic album Symbient. In 2003 she issued Come Across the River, her initial outing for Sonic Boom, a collection that contains some of the most candid lyrics she had written up to that point.
