Helen Sung has earned widespread praise as a pianist whose improvisational command leans into straight-ahead jazz and post-bop. After settling in New York early in the 2000s, she reached broader recognition by claiming first place in the 2007 Mary Lou Williams Piano Competition. In addition to appearing on recordings by Joe Chambers, Ronnie Cuber, and Terri Lyne Carrington, she has issued her own well-received projects such as the 2006 trio recording Helenistique, 2010’s Going Express, and 2014’s Anthem for a New Day, which included longtime collaborators saxophonist Seamus Blake and trumpeter Ingrid Jensen. Further joint efforts encompass the 2018 spoken-word venture Sung with Words alongside poet Dana Gioia and the 2021 release Quartet+ with the string ensemble Harlem Quartet.

Born in Houston, Texas, to Taiwanese immigrant parents, Sung began classical piano studies at age nine and later attended the city’s High School for the Performing Arts. She completed both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in classical piano at the University of Texas at Austin. While still an undergraduate she developed an interest in jazz; following her 1995 graduation she entered the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance, then housed at Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music, before ultimately moving to New York City. Performances with trumpeter Clark Terry, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, trumpeter Jon Faddis, and numerous others have followed, along with regular appearances alongside the Mingus Big Band. Under her own name she has documented several albums, among them 2004’s Push, 2006’s Helenistique, and 2007’s Sungbird (After Albeniz), each illustrating her refined handling of acoustic jazz.

In 2010 Sung recorded Going Express with saxophonist Seamus Blake, bassist Lonnie Plaxico, and drummer Eric Harland. Her debut quintet album, Anthem for a New Day, appeared in 2014 and again featured trumpeter Ingrid Jensen and Seamus Blake among the personnel. She joined poet Dana Gioia for the jazz-and-spoken-word project Sung with Words in 2018. After receiving a 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship, she issued Quartet+, a collaboration with the jazz-and-classical ensemble Harlem Quartet.
