Biography
Brooklyn trio Holy Hive craft an evocative mix that merges throwback soul with folk, funk, and pop elements. Their initial notice arrived with the 2019 Harping EP.
The group came together in 2015 around drummer Homer Steinweiss, singer/songwriter Paul Spring, and bassist Joe Harrison, each already established on separate musical routes. Steinweiss, a busy session musician, had performed with Bruno Mars, Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, and additional acts. Harrison likewise traveled with Charles Bradley and Frank Dukes, while Spring issued his own folk-focused records. Steinweiss and Spring first connected years earlier through girlfriends who happen to be cousins. Their evident musical rapport led them to start writing together, and they later added Harrison on bass. Live work followed, among them a year-long residency at Brooklyn’s Sunny’s Bar and a 2016 tour with Lee Fields. The Harping EP appeared in 2019 and included appearances by Mary Lattimore and Sasami. In 2020 the band delivered its first full-length album, Float Back to You, via Big Crown Records; the record carried contributions from El Michels Affair’s Leon Michels, the Roots trumpeter Dave Guy, the Shacks singer Shannon Wise, and further guests.
