Horsepower Productions, the London electronic collective, gained early recognition as foundational figures in dubstep, earning the first such designation from U.K. journalists because their music incorporated 2-step, techno, breakbeat, jungle, and above all the denser strains of reggae. Formed initially as a trio under the direction of Benny Ill, with Nassis and Lev Jnr (also known as Matt HP) alongside him, the group delivered the inaugural release for the influential bass label Tempa and later issued two joint projects: the partial compilation In Fine Style in 2002 and the full-length debut To the Rescue.

Following that album the original members went separate ways, leaving Benny Ill to operate alone for nearly six years until he enlisted newcomer Jay King on the 2009 12-inch Kingstep/Damn It. Nassis and Lev Jnr then returned to restore the lineup to four, aiming to define their approach within the changing dubstep environment. Work on the second proper album, Quest for Sonic Bounty, began in 2010 as the number of active participants rose to eight. In 2016 the project resurfaced as a duo to release its third album, Crooks Crime and Corruption, now expanding its range with Chicago house accents and occasional guitar lines from Harry Keyworth.
