Shanghai-based Tess Sun, performing and recording under the name Hyph11E, crafts and spins a ferocious, post-industrial blend of low-end club music with intricate sonic architecture. Projects including the 2020 album Aperture weave together footwork, gqom, noise, and breakcore, while probing concepts drawn from biology and geology.

Born in Hebei, China, Sun spent her childhood at the piano for multiple hours daily. She later took a position at a Beijing recording studio; after attending a 2014 performance by Japanese dubstep producer Goth-Trad at Shanghai’s club Dada with a friend, she resigned and relocated to that city. Her initial appearances as Hyph11E came via a 2016 compilation marking the launch of the Shanghai label Genome6.66Mbp. The tracks drew swift notice from experimental club artists and selectors across the globe, prompting her to join the Shanghai collective SVBKVLT and issue her first EP, Vanishing Cinema, in 2017, which incorporated reworkings by M.E.S.H. and Tzusing.

After numerous shows across Asia, she extended her performances to Europe beginning in 2018. Her slot at Uganda’s Nyege Nyege Festival in 2019 aligned with the arrival of the collaborative EP Slip B alongside Kenyan producer Slikback. Hyph11E’s first full-length record, Aperture—centered on the parasitic character of holes—appeared in 2020; its opening track, “Barnacles,” received a remix from Hyperdub founder Kode9.
