Renowned primarily for his raw depictions of urban existence and the art of the hustle, Iceberg Slim, whose real name was Robert Beck, achieved sales exceeding six million copies across his literary works, with Pimp: The Story of My Life standing out as the most celebrated. Following the precedent set by numerous writers who had previously ventured into spoken word recordings, he issued Reflections in 1976, featuring his recitation of provocative stories accompanied by the Red Holloway Quartet's fittingly groovy instrumentation. His portrayal of a hardened pimp from the streets exerted substantial influence on hip-hop culture, notably inspiring Ice-T and Ice Cube to adopt similar monikers in homage. In 1992, at seventy-three years old, Slim's life came to an end.
