Biography
Idan Raichel's compositions weave together Israel's multifaceted musical traditions into songs that prove both immediately engaging and deeply rooted in global cultures. Ethiopian folk traditions exert a strong pull on him, prompting the inclusion of assorted regional flavors and linguistic diversity within his pop sound.
The Idan Raichel Project's inaugural album appeared locally in 2002 before receiving a worldwide release under the same title in 2006. Raichel stepped out alone with the more restrained and personal At the Edge of the Beginning in 2016. Both projects landed inside the Top Ten of the Billboard World Albums chart.
Raichel first gained experience playing for Israeli troops nationwide as part of an army rock band before shaping his own wide-ranging musical path. A stint at a boarding school for immigrant children sparked his interest in channeling varied cultural backgrounds through song. During this period he also worked as a sideman alongside leading Israeli pop acts.
Drawing on an expanding circle of musician acquaintances and production skills, Raichel began laying down his own material. More than seventy players contributed to the demo that attracted support from Helicon Records and launched the Idan Raichel Project. The 2002 self-titled debut stirred international interest, leading to a demanding tour schedule that grew the group's following. Out of Depths arrived in 2005 and continued spotlighting underrepresented voices, among them singer Cabra Casey, who was born in a Sudanese refugee camp. The project's first international edition, likewise self-titled, reached listeners via Vermont's Cumbancha label in 2006.
Within My Walls, the second global release, appeared in 2009 with an expansive lineup that featured Cabo Verde-born vocalist Mayra Andrade, Colombian singer/songwriter Marta Gómez, and American singer/songwriter Somi of Rwandan and Ugandan descent. It reached number four on the Billboard World Albums chart. Quarter to Six, another Top Ten world-chart entry, followed in 2013 and enlisted musicians ranging from Ana Moura to Andreas Scholl and Vieux Farka Touré, Raichel's partner in the Touré-Raichel Collective.
Raichel returned to solo work with At the Edge of the Beginning, issued on Cumbancha in 2016, where it peaked at number three on the world chart. The live solo piano set Piano-Songs emerged a year later. Guests such as Berry Sakharof and Danay Suarez, plus the Idan Raichel Project on one track, appeared on And if You Will Come to Me, released by Cumbancha in 2019.
