Biography
Yair Dalal, an Iraqi-Israeli musician, composed extensively while performing on violin and oud, striving to create musical connections across the cultural divides embedded in his lineage. Born in 1955 to parents of Iraqi origin who had only recently settled in Israel, he spent his early years on a kibbutz there and trained on violin through Western classical methods. A 1982 collaboration with Bedouin musicians in the Sinai inspired him to draw from his own ancestral traditions. He forged a fusion of Arabic and Jewish musical elements, directing his work toward reconciliation between those communities. The 1990s brought numerous recordings from Dalal, issued both under his own name and with the Al Ol Ensemble. He broadened his sonic palette by integrating desert music traditions, combining their strings and melodies with instruments and influences sourced from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. A steadfast advocate for peace, Dalal appeared in Oslo in 1994 at an event marking the first anniversary of the peace accords, performing alongside a chorus of Palestinian, Israeli, and Norwegian children. The occasion highlighted his conviction in music’s universal reach and its power to connect communities locked in conflict. Nominated in 2002 by the BBC World Service for a BBC Radio 3 World Music Award, Dalal did not receive the honor, though the recognition confirmed the value of his efforts as both artist and peace activist.
