The palindrome-fixated indie rock outfit IfIHadAHiFi formed in northern Wisconsin, where the members forged a hybrid approach that merged abrasive noise rock textures with pulsing dance rhythms and inexpensive electronics. Dr. Awkward on drums, Mr. Alarm on bass, and Yale Delay on synth and guitar had already performed together in the regional act the Pop Machine before that group dissolved in late 1999. Once they launched their new band, the three musicians started gigging throughout the region and cut a demo whose complete title read We Will Not Be Responsible for Any Damage to Plastic Bowling Balls. This Includes Scratches, Nicks, Gouges, Etc. Use at Your Own Risk; the recording later surfaced on mp3.com. Noise Lesion joined next as an additional synth player, enabling the band to complete its first proper full-length album, Ones and Zeroes, issued by No Karma in late 2001. Noise Lesion left before the ensuing tour, and guitarist/synth player Reno Loner took over the vacated role.
