Formed in Toronto, Do Make Say Think originated in the psychedelic-tinged instrumental improvisations shared by bassist and trumpeter Charles Spearin, guitarist Justin Small, and drummer James Payment. The lineup later incorporated keyboardist Jason MacKenzie and multi-instrumentalist Ohad Benchetrit, with drummer Dave Mitchell joining as the final member in 1998. Late that year the group issued its self-titled debut on Constellation Records, then delivered Goodbye Enemy Airship the Landlord Is Dead in early 2000. Once touring for the second album concluded, the musicians retreated once more to the studio, emerging in March 2002 with & Yet & Yet, again on Constellation Records. Roughly eighteen months afterward came their fourth full-length, Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn. Acclaim greeted You, You're a History in Rust upon its 2007 arrival, followed by Other Truths two years later. A three-year break ensued until the band reassembled in 2012 for Constellation’s fifteenth-anniversary events. With momentum restored, they began composing anew and tracked their seventh album, Stubborn Persistent Illusions, themselves between 2014 and 2016 inside their Toronto facility. Constellation released the record in May 2017, coinciding with renewed attention from younger listeners who recognized the group as foundational post-rock innovators.
