The instrumental multimedia ensemble from Montreal known as Godspeed You! Black Emperor specializes in lengthy, repetition-driven chamber rock. Their compositions unfold through spare, deliberate dynamic builds that yield a trance-like, contemplative experience, one that gains storytelling dimensions through inserted fragments of found audio and the accompanying visuals supplied by their projection collaborators. Emerging in the closing years of the 1990s, the ensemble achieved its breakthrough with the 2000 double album Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven, an expansive work that drew broad critical acclaim and has since solidified its status as an enduring underground landmark. Following an extended period of inactivity during which members pursued separate endeavors, GY!BE resurfaced in 2012 with 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! and went on to issue further full-lengths that balanced somber tones with underlying hope, among them 2021's G_d's Pee at State's End! Their next release, the overtly political and anti-war statement No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead, arrived subsequently.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor came together in 1994 and issued a self-released cassette demo limited to 33 copies under the title All Lights Fucked on the Hairy Amp Drooling. Their debut studio effort, F#A#(Infinity), began as a 550-copy vinyl pressing on the Canadian imprint Constellation in 1997 before Kranky reissued it on CD the next year. Early 1999 saw the appearance of the EP Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada on both labels, bringing wider notice to a group that deliberately maintained a low profile. Recognition nevertheless expanded among listeners drawn to adventurous sounds, fueled by favorable coverage in The Wire, the band's contributions to the John Peel-produced Peel Sessions on BBC London, and their powerful concerts, such as their slot at Quebec's 1999 new music event FIMAV and a shared tour with Labradford later that year.

Live presentations by GY!BE typically feature nine or more players plus a projectionist, with the ensemble built around three guitars, two basses, French horn, violin, viola, cello, and percussion. The year 2000 introduced Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven, extending the group's orchestral rock palette further outward, followed by Yanqui U.X.O. in 2002. While members remained occupied with other ventures, notably A Silver Mt. Zion and Set Fire to Flames, GY!BE stayed dormant until regrouping for touring in 2010. A fresh tour began in September 2012 that included appearances at that year's Pitchfork and All Tomorrow's Parties festivals. In October the group revealed 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!, their first recording in ten years, just two weeks prior to its release. Around this period drummer Tim Herzog took over for Bruce Cawdron, after which GY!BE performed intermittently while developing their sixth album across late 2013 and 2014.

Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress was captured in Montreal and North Carolina, marking the first single-LP release since 1999. Produced and mixed by Greg Norman, it surfaced in March 2015 and was succeeded two years afterward by the intense yet ultimately hopeful Luciferian Towers. The ensemble returned in 2021 with their seventh album, G_d's Pee at State's End!, recorded in their hometown of Montreal under the guidance of Besnard Lakes' Jace Lasek; its core themes originated during road travels and were assembled in the studio amid the intervals between COVID-19 restrictions in late 2020. In 2022 a previously missing 1994 demo tape, All Lights Fucked on the Hairy Amp Drooling, surfaced via a fan leak. Co-founder Efrim Menuck, who had created the cassette prior to the band's formation and performed the majority of its parts himself, authorized an official digital edition, directing all proceeds to Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East. Two years later GY!BE issued No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead, whose title explicitly references the Palestinian casualty count in the Gaza Strip amid the Israel-Hamas conflict.
