Biography
This Will Destroy You formed in San Marcos, Texas during 2005 as a quartet of guitarists Chris King and Jeremy Galindo, bassist Raymond Brown, and drummer Andrew Miller. Drawn together by the idea of an entirely instrumental venture, the four recorded a demo that appeared unchanged later that year as the Young Mountain EP. The release earned strong critical notice, prompting a contract with Magic Bullet Records. Brown departed in 2007, with Donovan “Dono” Jones assuming bass and contributing ethereal Rhodes and additional keyboard textures. The self-titled debut album arrived in 2008, followed in 2009 by the Field Studies split with Lymbyc Systym. Drummer Andrew Miller also exited around this period, succeeded by Alex Bhore. In 2010 the band issued the Moving on the Edges of Things EP and the Communal Blood single.
Over time the quartet gravitated toward a brooding fusion of doom metal and shoegaze. Their proper second album, Tunnel Blanket, surfaced in 2011 via Suicide Squeeze. Remixes, compilation appearances, and film-soundtrack contributions maintained their activity level, leading to the 2013 live set Live in Reykjavik, Iceland. Despite internal difficulties, the drone-centric Another Language emerged in fall 2014 as their fourth studio record. Extensive touring followed, and in 2017 the group released a single version of the Another Language track “The Puritan” that included a Julianna Barwick remix. Two further albums, New Others Part One and New Others Part Two, appeared in rapid succession during 2018.
Rejecting the post-rock tag frequently attached to them, the Texans instead cite shoegaze, ambient, and doom metal among their touchstones while favoring extended atmospheric instrumentals built on varied guitar effects and shifting dynamics. Their trajectory began with the well-received 2005 demo EP Young Mountain and continued through the metal-leaning Tunnel Blanket in 2011 and the drone-intensive Another Language in 2014.
