U.K. supergroup and progressive post-rock musical collective Crippled Black Phoenix has drawn upon a rotating roster that has included nearly 30 members. Justin Greaves of Electric Wizard and Iron Monkey has remained the constant driving force since founding the project in 2004 alongside Mogwai bassist Dominic Aitchison. The band issued its debut album, A Love of Shared Disasters, in 2006 and began emphasizing live performances that frequently placed more than a dozen musicians onstage. Resurrectionists and Night Raider were tracked between March 2007 and August 2008 at S.O.A. Studio in Bristol; both appeared in 2009, accompanied by the compilation 200 Tons of Bad Luck that gathered material from the pair. I, Vigilante arrived in 2010 on Geoff Barrow’s Invada Records and drew notice for its stoner rock interpretation of Journey’s “Of a Lifetime.” The more conceptual (Mankind) The Crafty Ape followed in 2012, after which Greaves and company issued the 2013 live album Live Poznań and 2014’s White Light Generator. Also in 2014 came Fall, the first album from Greaves and Belinda Kordic’s side project Se Delan. Crippled Black Phoenix delivered its sixth full-length, Bronze, in 2016 through the French extreme metal imprint Season of Mist; the same year Se Delan released its sophomore LP, Drifter. The Horrific Honorifics EP surfaced in 2017, presenting an assortment of covers that highlighted the group’s wide-ranging influences through renditions of songs by Swans, NoMeansNo, and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Their second Season of Mist album, Great Escape, appeared in 2018 after the nine-minute single “To You I Give.”
