Neurosis came together in Oakland, California toward the end of 1985, crafting an approach that merged industrial sounds with heavy metal and alternative rock elements, often incorporating lyrics with spiritual themes. The lineup consisting of Steve Von Till handling guitar, vocals, and percussion, Dave Edwardson on bass and vocals, Scott Kelly also on bass and vocals, Jason Roeder on drums, Noah Landis providing keyboards along with samples and tape effects, and Pete Inc. managing visuals, issued their first record Pain of Mind during 1987. It would be almost five years before another album emerged. Souls at Zero along with The Word as Law both came out in 1992, with Enemy of the Sun appearing the following year. Through Silver in Blood from 1996 stood as their most successful effort up to that point, and the 1999 album Times of Grace, produced by Steve Albini, expanded on that success. Sovereign appeared the next year. Sun That Never Sets arrived in 2001 and emphasized more tribal rhythms and structures, whereas The Eye of Every Storm in 2004 maintained traces of hazy folk influences even as the band revisited its sludge metal origins. The ninth studio release Given to the Rising reached listeners in 2007 and earned recognition as the 76th best metal album of the decade according to Decibel magazine, while Honor Found in Decay followed in 2012 as the fifth album featuring Albini at the controls. A particularly active period unfolded in 2016 when Relapse handled vinyl reissues for both A Sun That Never Sets and The Eye of Every Storm in addition to putting out the fresh studio album Fires Within Fires.
