Emerging from Sacramento, California, Giant Squid first surfaced in 2005 via an independently distributed disc called Metridium Field. Billy Anderson—whose credits include Neurosis, Melvins, and High on Fire—oversaw its production, and the record’s singular blend of doom, indie, progressive, and psychedelic rock drew the notice of The End Records. The label therefore authorized the recently transplanted to Austin, Texas, and reconstituted lineup—husband-and-wife pair Aaron Gregory (vocals, guitar, banjo, theremin) and Aurielle Gregory (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Bryan Beeson (bass), and Michael Conroy (drums)—to remake the material nearly from the ground up, yielding a worldwide edition in 2006 titled Metridium Fields.
