Formed in Reykjavík during 1995, the Icelandic group Sólstafir drew from progressive, black, and Viking metal traditions while forging a post-metal identity marked by stark, wintry textures. Emerging in the early 2000s with a style rooted in the frigid austerity of classic black metal, the band shifted toward expansive, mood-focused compositions on their widely praised second album, Masterpiece of Bitterness, issued in 2005 by the Spikefarm label; that atmospheric direction carried through later works including Svartir Sandar in 2011 and Endless Twilight of Codependent Love in 2020.

Longtime associates Aðalbjörn Tryggvason on guitar and vocals, Halldór Einarsson on bass, and Guðmundur Óli Pálmason on drums established the project, and after recording several demos the lineup contracted to the duo of Tryggvason and Pálmason. Bassist Svavar Austmann joined in place of Einarsson, enabling the sessions that produced Í Blóði og Anda, though repeated obstacles involving the label and personnel postponed its release until 2002. By then Sólstafir had expanded to a quartet through the addition of guitarist Sæþór Maríus Sæþórsson, whose first recorded contribution appeared on the 2002 EP Black Death.

A 2004 agreement with Spinefarm’s Spikefarm division paved the way for Masterpiece of Bitterness the next year. The 2009 release Köld introduced additional post-metal atmospherics that the band refined further on Svartir Sandar in 2012—home to their breakthrough single “Fjara”—and on Ótta in 2014, both appearing through Season of Mist. Founding drummer Pálmason departed in 2015, succeeded by Hallgrímur Jón Hallgrímsson. The reconstituted four-piece delivered their sixth album, Berdreyminn, in 2017, achieving notable European chart placement. Endless Twilight of Codependent Love in 2020 signaled a measured return to black-metal origins, an approach extended and broadened on Hin Helga Kvöl (“The Holy Suffering”) in 2024, marking the band’s first outing for Century Media.
