Biography
A dynamic French post-metal outfit emerged in 2000 under the leadership of multi-instrumentalist Neige, who has guided Alcest through successive phases from raw black metal into shoegaze, post-metal, and the hybrid blackgaze style the group helped define. Their arrangements consistently fuse intense melody with lush, swirling electronic textures and vocals that alternate between screams and clean delivery. The earliest recordings captured a lo-fi, abrasive strain of melodic black metal, yet the 2005 two-track EP Le Secret already signaled a decisive turn: Neige stood as sole member, the lo-fi aesthetic persisted, and black metal elements gave way to expansive, melodic shoegaze. By 2007’s Souvenirs d’un Autre Monde the project had crystallized into a fully realized shoegaze-metal entity, while 2014’s Shelter stood as its most radio-friendly statement. Later albums such as the cathartic 2019 release Spiritual Instinct and 2024’s Les Chants de l’Aurore deliberately revisited earlier stylistic waypoints to synthesize the band’s entire history.
Neige, who had previously collaborated with Peste Noire, Mortifera, and Amesoeurs, initially launched Alcest as a solo endeavor. The project briefly expanded when Aegnor, also of Peste Noire, and Argoth joined, yielding the four-track demo Tristesse Hivernale in 1999, a straightforward black-metal document that diverged sharply from subsequent directions. After that release the lineup reverted to Neige alone, who further distanced the music from metal in favor of atmospheric textures. The 2005 EP Le Secret more faithfully reflected his longstanding childhood fascination with an “otherworld,” rendering that vision audible. The first proper Alcest album, Souvenirs d’un Autre Monde (“Memories of Another World”), appeared on Prophecy Productions in 2007 and earned widespread critical praise. Split EPs with Angmar and Les Discrets followed in 2007 and 2009, respectively. The long-awaited full-length Écailles de Lune arrived in 2010, extending the band’s international profile through enthusiastic reviews of its genre-blending approach. In 2011 Prophecy Productions and Neige reissued Le Secret with freshly recorded takes of “Le Secret” and “Élévation” intended to improve production values; Winterhalter, formerly of Peste Noire, supplied drums, while the original 2005 versions were retained to maintain historical accuracy. January 2012 brought the third album, Les Voyages de l’Âme.
The fourth album, Shelter, issued in early 2014, marked a decisive departure from metal. Neige, now credited as Stéphane “Neige” Paut, and drummer Jean “Winterhalter” Deflandre enlisted Sigur Rós producer Birgir Jón Birgisson, the string quartet from Amiina, and guest vocals from Slowdive’s Neil Halstead. Following an international tour the duo returned to the studio late in 2015. Kodama, the fifth studio album, drew conceptual inspiration from the animated film Princess Mononoke, reintroducing metal textures reminiscent of 2010’s Écailles de Lune and appearing on Prophecy Productions in fall 2016. Between January and May 2019, working with producer Benoît Roux at Drudenhaus studios in France, Alcest completed Spiritual Instinct. Written amid and after the Kodama touring cycle, Neige described the record to his publicist as “something that needed to get out of me. It’s darker than usual, and heavier,” considering it his most personal and cathartic work. Nuclear Blast released the six-track set in fall 2019; a deluxe edition added Perturbator’s synth-wave remix of “Sapphire” and Ben Chisholm’s remix of “Protection.” An international tour commenced in early 2020. Alcest resurfaced in 2024 with Les Chants de l’Aurore.
