Biography
My Dying Bride emerged from England as a long-established outfit in doom and gothic metal, distinguished by intricate song architectures, somber and introspective sonic textures, refined studio craftsmanship, and an expressive live presentation. Although they originated with a death metal approach that moved at a deliberate pace and produced intense early works such as the 1993 releases As the Flower Withers and Turn Loose the Swans, their subsequent output shifted toward an even more deliberate, shadowy, and emotionally layered character. Albums including 1999’s The Light at the End of the World and 2001’s The Dreadful Hours incorporated classical and romantic motifs, helping establish gothic metal while exerting strong influence on the second wave of doom alongside Anathema and Paradise Lost—the “Peaceville Three,” all then rostered to the same imprint. Widely praised for its innovations, 2006’s A Line of Deathless Kings introduced a restrained acoustic variant of doom rock, whereas the charting 2012 release A Map of All Our Failures restored prominent electric guitar textures. By the arrival of 2015’s Feel the Misery, the ensemble’s identity had crystallized around robust, contemporary doom metal. A five-disc rarities collection, A Harvest of Dread, appeared in 2019, followed the next year by the 30th-anniversary studio album The Ghost of Orion. After further road work and recording sessions, the band issued A Mortal Binding in 2024.
The group coalesced in Halifax, England, during 1990 when guitarist Andrew Craighan and drummer Rick Miah departed Abiosis to team with vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe and guitarist Calvin Robertshaw. Six months later a four-track demo secured interest from the small French label Listenable Records, which put out their debut 7" single “God Is Alone.” The pressing sold through rapidly, prompting Peaceville to offer a contract. Their departure from death metal was signaled by the 1992 debut full-length As the Flower Withers, after which the music grew progressively slower, more atmospheric, and lyrically tragic. Subsequent recordings such as 1995’s The Angel and the Dark River, the 1998 experimental concept piece 34.788%... Complete, and 2000’s The Dreadful Hours solidified their stature. They became consistent sell-out draws and festival headliners, a status they have held ever since. With 2008’s A Line of Deathless Kings the music reached a new degree of restraint without sacrificing emotional weight or dramatic flair. The 2012 album A Map of All Our Failures marked a return to gothic-rock foundations while advancing the doom idiom.
Formed in June 1990, the quartet first captured the demo tape Towards the Sinister. Following the Listenable 7" single, they joined Peaceville Records in 1991. Their initial Peaceville offering was the 1991 EP Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium. The debut album As the Flower Withers followed in 1992; after touring Britain and Europe they released the EP The Thrash of Naked Limbs. The third album, Turn Loose the Swans, coincided with another European trek, after which the band withdrew for a year. During the hiatus Peaceville issued the box set The Stories and the three-EP compilation Trinity.
My Dying Bride resurfaced in 1995 with The Angel and the Dark River, also packaged as a double set with a live EP. Their fourth album, Like Gods of the Sun, arrived late in 1996; 34.788%...Complete came two years afterward, while My Dying Bride and The Dreadful Hours both appeared in early 2001. After 2004’s Songs of Darkness, Words of Light and just before 2006’s A Line of Deathless Kings, drummer Shaun Taylor-Steels exited for health reasons. Bassist Adrian Jackson departed in 2007, as did session drummer John Bennett. The lineup stabilized with Lena Abé on bass and Dan Mullins on drums. An Ode to Woe surfaced in 2008, followed the next year by For Lies I Sire.
In 2011 the band marked its 20th anniversary with Evinta, described as a project fifteen years in development that yielded a double-CD (or limited triple-CD) set of entirely new music “arranged to the soundscapes of sorrows past and hopeless futures.” Frontman Aaron Stainthorpe added fresh vocals to earlier melodic and textural motifs, assisted by French soprano Lucie Roche. Keyboardist Jonny Maudling (Bal-Sagoth) handled arrangements and co-produced alongside Stainthorpe and guitarist Andrew Craighan.
After a European tour the group immediately returned to the studio with producer Mags (Robert Magoolagan) and engineer Grant Berry, writing and tracking fourteen songs; ten formed the 2012 album A Map of All Our Failures, while the remaining four appeared the following year on the EP The Manuscript. Upon returning from an American tour in 2014, the band dismissed guitarist Hamish Glencross and reinstated founding member Calvin Robertshaw. Their 25th anniversary arrived in 2015, prompting a return to Academy Studios in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. In July they released the video single “And My Father Left Forever,” followed in September by the twelfth studio album Feel the Misery. Shortly afterward Stainthorpe’s five-year-old daughter received a cancer diagnosis, prompting an indefinite pause in activities. In March 2017 the group announced its signing to Nuclear Blast Records. That same year drummer Dan Mullins departed; Shaun Taylor-Steels, who had played on A Map of All Our Failures as a session musician and held the drum chair from 1999 to 2006, rejoined. In May 2018 My Dying Bride issued the five-disc retrospective A Harvest of Dread containing rarities, early material, previously unheard pre-production demos, selected favorites, and live recordings. A vinyl edition of the original Towards the Sinister also appeared for the first time, pressed on red wax with the initial artwork, lyrics, and archival photographs.
Early in 2018 the band regrouped after positive medical news regarding Stainthorpe’s daughter. Without prior indication, Calvin Robertshaw resigned via text. Taylor-Steels left in December before sessions at Mark Mynett’s Mynetaur Productions studio. Reduced in number, My Dying Bride proceeded with bassist Lena Abé, Craighan, violinist and keyboardist Shaun Macgowan, drummer Jeff Singer, and new guitarist Neil Blanchett, who joined mid-recording even though Craighan had already tracked most guitar parts. Guests included Wardruna’s Lindy-Fay Hella on vocals and backing vocals plus cellist Jo Quail. The advance track “Your Broken Shore” surfaced in January 2020, followed by “Tired of Tears” in February. Nuclear Blast released The Ghost of Orion in March; despite personnel shifts and family challenges, the album received strong audience approval.
Following extensive touring, My Dying Bride entered Mynett’s Mynetaur studio from July to September 2023. Their fifteenth studio album, A Mortal Binding, appeared on Nuclear Blast in April 2024.
