Formed in Bordeaux, France, during the summer of 2001, the trance-rock/post-metal outfit Year of No Light spent its early years refining its approach through stage appearances and rehearsal sessions before issuing a debut demo tape in 2004. That recording quickly built a reputation for the sound of "The Cure playing sludge," which in turn enabled the lineup of Julien Perez (vocals, keyboards), Pierre Anouilh (guitar), Jérôme Alban (guitar, keyboards), Johan Sebenne (bass, electronics), Bertrand Sebenne (drums, keyboards), and Mathieu Mégemont (drums, electronics) to complete the band's first album, Nord, in 2006. After parting ways with Perez, the group recruited Shiran Kaidine (vocals, guitar) of Monarch! as his replacement and spent the following years focused on live work and split-release collaborations, finally delivering the second album Ausserwelt in 2010 to the approval of both fans and critics.
