In 2004 the Los Angeles outfit Intronaut took shape as an informal side project uniting Anubis Rising vocalist and guitarist Sacha Dunable with then-Uphill Battle drummer Danny Walker, himself formerly of Exhumed. Their growing body of material drew on the heavy, forward-looking style then associated with Mastodon and, to a smaller extent, the players’ prior bands, prompting the pair to recruit Exhumed guitarist and vocalist Leon del Muerte along with bassist Joe Lester for the recording of the Null EP, which Goodfellow Records issued in early 2006. Roughly half a year afterward the same lineup delivered the EP’s natural successor, the band’s first proper album, Void. The next year del Muerte departed to concentrate on Murder Construct, making way for Dave Timnick, whose first appearance on an Intronaut studio release came with the Century Media-issued Prehistoricisms in 2008. Valley of Smoke followed in 2010, and Habitual Levitations (Instilling Words with Tones) appeared three years later. In 2015 the group unveiled its fourth full-length effort, The Direction of Last Things.
