Biography
Mouth of the Architect, hailing from Dayton, OH, assembled its original roster for the band's debut album Time & Withering in 2004. That lineup comprised Jason Watkins handling vocals, keyboards, and samples, Gregory Lahm on guitar and vocals, Dave Mann on drums, Alex Vernon also contributing guitar and vocals, and Derik Sommer on bass. The group aligned itself with the exploratory path charted by Neurosis, Isis, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, pushing heavy metal toward its more progressive and trance-inducing frontiers. The configuration fractured soon after, leaving the band on the brink of total dissolution until Watkins, Lahm, and Mann regrouped and traveled to Seattle. There they finally captured fresh recordings, enlisting the temporary services of bassist Brian Cook. An extended track called "Sleepwalk Powder" appeared on a split release alongside Translation Loss label mates Kenoma in early 2006, while the second Mouth of the Architect full-length, The Ties That Blind, surfaced later the same year.
