Biography
In 1978 the London, England post-punk outfit In Camera was assembled by Jeff Wilmott on drums and piano, Pete Moore on bass, Andrew Gray on guitar and keyboards, and David Steiner on vocals and keyboards. Their jagged, driving sound on the 1980 4AD single “Final Achievement”/“Die Laughing” and the IV Songs EP drew comparisons to Joy Division, Public Image Ltd., and Section 25. Although the group disbanded in 1981, Fin—an EP drawn from their December 1980 BBC session for John Peel—appeared the following year. Gray later became a member of another 4AD act, the Wolfgang Press, staying with that group for roughly a decade. During the early ’90s In Camera re-formed and cut new tracks that surfaced on the compilation 13 (Lucky for Some). A more expansive anthology titled Era arrived in 2015 as a two-disc package; its compact-disc version gathered every previously issued 1980–1982 recording together with demos, rehearsals, and live performances from 1979–1981, while the double-vinyl edition featured a reduced track selection.
