In 1986 the Angolan music and dance ensemble Irmãos Verdades came together with a roster of fourteen musicians and dancers, among them alumni from Duo Ouro Negro. Years of preparation eventually opened doors to overseas stages in Paris, the United States, and Canada after the 1989 arrival of additional players formerly associated with the Raúl Indipwo band. The collective’s first long-form recording appeared in 1994 under the title Suadades de Africa—translated as homesickness or lament for Africa—and included the track “Suadades de Luanda,” which resonated widely across Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, and Portugal. Female vocals supplied by Alcinda Ramos soon entered the group’s evolving arrangements. Their follow-up album, Fusao, spotlighted the single “Yolanda,” which attained anthem-like status throughout Brazil. The third collection, Apaixonados, received gold certification in Portugal and platinum certification in Mozambique, confirming Irmãos Verdades as one of the leading acts within the Portuguese-speaking sphere. Issued in 2001, So + 1 Bejo matched that commercial momentum with one platinum and two gold awards. A 2003 retrospective compilation and the 2005 breakthrough album 5 extended the band’s profile across Europe, prompting extensive tours beyond the Afro-Portuguese circuit and establishing the group as a significant presence in the global music marketplace.
