James Lavelle established the respected left-field hip-hop imprint Mo Wax, which became the British home for DJ Shadow’s pioneering Endtroducing..... and numerous other landmark releases. From the early ’90s onward he has guided the enduring UNKLE collective, a project whose remixes—among them work for Radiohead, Massive Attack, and Robert Plant—along with studio albums beginning with 1998’s Psyence Fiction and film scores such as 2005’s Odyssey in Rome, have steadily broadened in scope. Although the London native founded Mo Wax with partner Tim Goldsworthy while still in his teens, he had already begun sharpening his turntable technique years earlier and stayed sought after by promoters at home and abroad through the mid-2010s. Several of his commercially issued DJ mixes appeared during this period, among them FabricLive’s inaugural volume in 2001 and multiple editions for Global Underground between 2002 and 2015. In 2016 the documentary Artist & Repertoire, which examines the ups and downs of his career, debuted at the South by Southwest festival.
