Although the name James Luther Dickinson may not ring many bells, the distinctive tones of his piano and organ have reached wide audiences. In collaboration with his ensemble the Dixie Flyers, who served as the house band at Atlantic-owned Criteria Recording Studios in Miami, FL, he backed an array of notable performers that included Aretha Franklin, Carmen McRae, Delaney & Bonnie, Dee Dee Warwick, Jerry Jeff Walker, Ronnie Hawkins, Sam & Dave, Sam the Sham, Brook Benton, Lulu, and (Little) Esther Phillips. His keyboard contributions also appeared on tracks by the Flaming Groovies, Albert King, Ronnie Milsap, Eric Quincy Tate, Petula Clark, Maria Muldaur, and Duane Allman.
Dickinson proved equally adept behind the console. After launching his production career with Dan Penn's Emmet the Singing Ranger Live in the Woods, he guided sessions for Ry Cooder, Alex Chilton, Jason & the Scorchers, Green on Red, the Replacements, Primal Scream, Mudhoney, and Rocket from the Crypt.
As a recording artist in his own right Dickinson kept a far lower profile. His first solo outing, Dixie Fried, arrived in 1972 and featured Dr. John on piano along with an uncredited Eric Clapton on guitar. In the early '80s he and Dixie Fried guitarist/vocalist Charlie Freeman started Mud Boys & the Neutrons, yet the group shelved its planned debut record after deeming it unsatisfactory. Their initial release, Known Felons in Drag, finally surfaced in 1986; the follow-up, They Walk Among Us, appeared the next year, while their third album, Negro Street at Dawn, waited until 1993.
A Memphis, TN native, Dickinson began as a session musician in the city's studios. With producer Sam Phillips he played on Tony Joe White's Continued and Betty LaVette's He Made a Woman Out of Me. When Atlantic invited him to assemble a resident group for its newly purchased Criteria Recording Studios, Dickinson enlisted keyboardist Mike Utley, bassist Tommy McClure, drummer Sammy Creason, and ex-Mar-Keys guitarist Charlie Freeman. Though the unit contributed to numerous recordings, the industry shift toward self-contained bands cut their tenure short. After departing the studio in late 1970, they backed Rita Coolidge and Kris Kristofferson on the road until the mid-'70s. Their final performance, held October 1, 1978, at Memphis' Orpheum Theater, was captured and issued as Beale Street Saturday Night. Dickinson tracked his debut solo album just before the Dixie Flyers exited Criteria and maintained ties with Atlantic, serving first as an assistant to producer Jerry Wexler before advancing to vice-president.
