Mexican Latin pop singer Jan, born Gustavo Cárdenas Avila, first took up singing at age 14 with companions in his hometown of Celaya before relocating to the United States for formal musical training. Upon his return to Mexico he became a member of the regional group Sombras. A 1996 appearance on the widely viewed program Siempre En Domingo led to a recording contract with PolyGram, which released his self-titled debut album the following year and the follow-up Acariciame El Alma soon after. He further established himself as a Latin soap opera performer through roles in Soñadoras, DKDA, Mi Destino Eres Tú, and La Intrusa.
