Throughout most of his professional life, Zelenka held a position as court musician in Dresden. He did travel briefly on a few occasions to pursue studies or engage in musical research. In the court orchestra, his role began as a double bass player, and he eventually assisted the Kapellmeister, whose health was failing, with various responsibilities. When the Kapellmeister passed away, another musician received the appointment, leaving Zelenka disappointed over the insufficient acknowledgment of his contributions. Renowned for his expertise in counterpoint and his inventive approach to harmony, he composed pieces featuring meticulously detailed dynamic markings. A few of these scores include rare crescendo indications that specify each step of increasing volume, such as inscribing “piano,” “forte,” and “piu forte” beneath a single note played by an instrument.
