Born on 1 February 1973 in Ashland, Kentucky, USA, Carter began his musical journey on guitar and mandolin before turning to the fiddle. Exposure to Del McCoury’s band via television, followed by a Kentucky festival appearance by the same group, prompted the instrumental change; because McCoury’s lineup already included both a guitarist and a mandolinist, Carter pursued fiddle to create an opening. After two years of preparation he reached the necessary level and became a member of the band in 1992. More than ten years spent alongside McCoury established his reputation throughout bluegrass circles.

Additional sessions include work with the Gibson Brothers on their album Bona Fide. In 2005 Carter performed with the bluegrass ensemble WhiteHouse alongside Charlie Cushman on banjo, David Parmley on guitar, Missy Raines on bass, and Larry Stephenson on mandolin. Numbers regularly featured in his sets encompass “On The Move,” “Carter Country,” “Look What The Dog Brought Home,” “Hiding In The Bayou,” “I Could Find A Way,” and “Back Up And Push.” (NB: A separate guitarist also named Jason Carter has issued contemporary Spanish and world-music recordings on the Arc Music label.)
