Biography
Silvia Jiménez Alvarez operates under the performing alias JASSS as a Spanish producer, DJ, and sound designer whose work centers on industrial-tinged techno. After establishing herself in Berlin, she earned recognition for her sets on the city’s dynamic electronic circuit ahead of her initial single releases in 2016. Her debut full-length, the dark-hued Weightless, arrived the next year via the iDEAL label. Building on the gritty avant-garde of those early efforts, JASSS grew more unpredictable with 2021’s A World of Service on Ostgut Ton, an album that shifted from visceral hyperpop to trip-hop while incorporating Alvarez’s vocals for the first time. She resurfaced in 2024 with “Machine Food,” issued as part of London’s fabric Originals series.
Raised in Northern Spain, Alvarez began DJ’ing during her early twenties. A period spent in the Netherlands prompted her initial experiments as a producer, reshaping field recordings into layered electronic works. Her 2011 relocation to Berlin allowed these separate strands to converge. Performing as JASSS, she progressed through the local DJ circuit before issuing a run of 2016 singles on the Mannequin label. The tough industrial aesthetic first heard on “Mother” and “Es Complicado” received further expansion on the 2017 album Weightless, which also positioned her as a touring artist beyond Berlin.
Following a 2020 12" on AD 93’s Whities series, she signaled a new phase with the wild and genre-reticent A World of Service in 2021. Her debut release for Germany’s Ostgut Ton label blended several vocal tracks with blistering instrumentals that explored multiple fresh directions. A late-2023 remix of Canadian producer Nathan Micay’s “To the God Named Dream” preceded the 2024 appearance of “Machine Food,” her contribution to the fabric Originals compilation In Pursuit of Pleasure.
