Biography
Versatile and supportive as a drummer, J.C. Heard moved with ease across swing, bop, and blues contexts. Early on he appeared as a dancer in vaudeville. His first major drumming post arrived in 1939 with Teddy Wilson’s big band; subsequent engagements placed him in Wilson’s sextet as well as alongside Coleman Hawkins and Benny Carter. From 1942 to 1945 Heard held a chair in Cab Calloway’s Orchestra, cut sessions with leading bop players, fronted his own group at Cafe Society from 1946 to 1947, joined Erroll Garner’s Trio in 1948, and traveled with Jazz at the Philharmonic. Between 1953 and 1957 he worked in Japan and Australia, then freelanced around New York from 1957 to 1966—including a stint in the Coleman Hawkins–Roy Eldridge quintet and a 1961 return to Teddy Wilson’s Trio—before relocating to Detroit in 1966, where he led bands and guided younger players through the mid-1980s.
