Born on 11 March 1944 in Birmingham, England, Geoff Turton initially worked as a toolmaker. He rose to prominence during the mid-1960s fronting the Rockin’ Berries, yet stepped away from the group to pursue an independent path by the autumn of 1968. Describing himself at the time as a ‘penniless bum’, Turton re-emerged under the name Jefferson and achieved brief recognition through the 1969 single ‘Colour Of My Love’, which Paul Ryan had composed. Although he never established himself as a leading figure of the 1970s, Jefferson secured modest recognition across the Atlantic when ‘Baby Take Me In Your Arms’ climbed into the American Top 30. Following engagements on the U.S. college circuit, he came back to Britain in 1972, where he remained unable to shed his domestic reputation as a one-hit wonder.
