An English composer and organist whose output centered on sacred music, he remains known above all for the piece long titled “Trumpet Voluntary.” Active in the generation immediately before Purcell, he saw that younger master credited with the same work until modern scholarship restored it to him. Contemporary records place him among the singers at James II’s coronation and confirm his tenure as organist of Winchester College; he is also thought to have aided John Blow at St. Paul’s. Surviving manuscripts encompass complete services, numerous anthems, metrical psalms and hymns, a handful of stage pieces, and assorted instrumental works. Most of these compositions adhere strictly to the formal expectations of their day, displaying a correctness that seldom ventures beyond convention. The vocal lines reflect a courteous, gently mannered temperament, while the instrumental writing remains spare and direct in texture.
