Jesse Dayton embodies the independent spirit of Texas outlaws, following the unconventional path of country music established in his chosen home of Austin. As a vocalist, composer, and guitarist, he initially rose to prominence via his connection to Rob Zombie. The musician who transitioned into horror filmmaking enlisted Dayton for composing and performing the soundtrack to Banjo & Sullivan: The Ultimate Collection, derived from his 2004 movie The Devil's Rejects. Zombie further cast Dayton as the frontman of the rockabilly group Captain Clegg & the Night Creatures in the 2009 release Halloween II. Nevertheless, over his extensive career spanning decades, this country performer resists being viewed solely through his ties to Zombie. Across multiple self-released projects during the 2000s and 2010s, Dayton produced sets of new songs alongside homages to figures such as Kinky Friedman, while exploring avenues like collaborating with like-minded artist Samantha Fish on their 2023 joint record crafted by Jon Spencer, and partnering with Shooter Jennings for the 2024 effort The Hard Way Blues.

Born in Beaumont, a town in eastern Texas, Jesse Dayton grew up immersed in both traditional Texas country sounds and punk rock. His professional music journey began in rockabilly ensembles, progressing through the Road Kings and the Alamo Jet prior to launching his solo career with Raisin' Cain in 1995. Issued via Justice Records, that record elevated his standing among country enthusiasts, leading to performance and recording opportunities alongside artists including Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Ray Price, and Supersuckers.

After concluding his tenure with Justice during the latter portion of the 1990s, Dayton persisted in his independent efforts into the early 2000s by issuing multiple records via his own Stag Records label. Among these were Hey Nashvegas! in 2001, followed by Tall Texas Tales in 2003 and Country Soul Brother in 2004. During that period, Rob Zombie provided a significant opportunity by recruiting Dayton to compose and perform material for Banjo & Sullivan, the imaginary country outfit featured in The Devil's Rejects. The resulting Banjo & Sullivan: The Ultimate Collection came out in June 2005 through Hip-O, marking the beginning of an ongoing artistic alliance, yet Dayton maintained his touring schedule, delivering South Austin Sessions in 2005 along with Holdin' Our Own, a collaborative album from 2007 alongside Brennen Leigh, ahead of his role in Zombie's Halloween II during 2009. In the motion picture, Dayton portrayed the head of Captain Clegg & the Night Creatures, and he also produced a related record under the same moniker.

Returning to his country foundations in the early 2010s, Dayton put out One for the Dance Halls in 2010 and Jesse Sings Kinky in 2012, the latter honoring Kinky Friedman and drawing from Dayton's short stint portraying the Texas outlaw in Ted Swindley's theatrical work Becoming Kinky: The World According to Kinky Friedman. He made his initial foray into writing and directing with Zombex in 2013, a comedic horror picture taking place in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. Throughout the mid-2010s, Dayton engaged with John Doe's circle by joining the vocalist on a 2014 tour and substituting for the unwell Billy Zoom during X's 2015 tour. He resumed solo releases in 2016 via The Revealer, his debut project on Blue Elan, which included the protest track "Charlottesville." Dayton's output remained high through the end of the 2010s, with The Outsider appearing in 2018, succeeded the following year by the concert recording On Fire in Nashville and the collection of covers Mixtape, Vol. 1. The Gulf Coast Sessions EP emerged in 2020, succeeded by the complete album Beaumonster in 2021. Subsequently, Dayton joined forces with blues vocalist Samantha Fish for Death Wish Blues in 2023, a Grammy-nominated project helmed by punk-blues icon Jon Spencer. Aligning with yet another rebellious personality, Dayton initiated a collaboration with Shooter Jennings that yielded several singles such as "Baby's Long Gone" and "Angel in My Pocket," both featured on the 2024 full-length The Hard Way Blues, which Jennings produced.
