Although primarily recognized for his portrayal of the inept Gomer Pyle on television, Jim Nabors sustained a parallel and prosperous path as an easy-listening vocalist. He entered the world on June 12, 1930, in Sylacauga, Alabama, earned a business-administration diploma from the University of Alabama, and subsequently worked as a television apprentice editor while simultaneously performing in cabarets. A 1963 guest appearance on The Andy Griffith Show introduced audiences to his yokel character Gomer; what began as a single episode expanded into a recurring role across the following two seasons because of the character’s immediate popularity. The success prompted CBS to launch the 1965 spin-off Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., casting Nabors as an inept Marine private. His singing voice first reached a national audience during a 1964 appearance on The Danny Kaye Show, after which his baritone featured on numerous recordings that encompassed both gospel and country material. Nabors also performed on his own series, most memorably delivering “The Impossible Dream” from Man of La Mancha in the fourth-season episode “The Show Must Go On,” broadcast November 3, 1967—an interpretation that remained a staple of his live sets. Between 1969 and 1972 he presided over the variety series The Jim Nabors Show and maintained an active concert schedule. Nabors passed away at his Honolulu, Hawaii residence on November 30, 2017, at the age of 87.
