Biography
Jimmy Raney earned recognition as the quintessential cool jazz guitarist, delivering fluid bop solos through a restrained tone that masked substantial inner drive. Prior to a nine-month engagement with Woody Herman in 1948, he performed alongside Chicago-based ensembles. From that point forward he operated at the highest level, forming connections with Al Haig, Buddy DeFranco, Artie Shaw, and Terry Gibbs. The 1951-1952 association with Stan Getz proved landmark, establishing an exemplary musical partnership between the two artists. Raney also thrived as a member of the Red Norvo Trio from 1953 to 1954, before devoting six years chiefly to supper-club performances with pianist Jimmy Lyon from 1954 to 1960. Following further work with Getz in 1962-1963, he returned to Louisville and stepped away from music until resurfacing in the early 1970s. Throughout the 1970s Raney recorded frequently for Xanadu. He collaborated often with his son Doug Raney, whose guitar approach bore a striking resemblance to his own, while maintaining reduced activity during the late 1980s and 1990s until his death in 1995.
