As the elder sibling of David Ruffin, lead singer for the Temptations, Jimmy Ruffin secured multiple major successes in his own right throughout the mid-'60s on Berry Gordy's Soul label. He first joined another Motown offshoot, the short-lived Miracle, in 1961, though his standout vocal on "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" established him as a star in 1966. Subsequent releases included "I've Passed This Way Before" and "Gonna Give Her All the Love I've Got." In 1970 he joined David, already pursuing a solo career, for a brief run as the Ruffin Brothers that produced a duet version of Ben E. King's "Stand by Me." An impressive comeback arrived in 1980 on RSO Records through the major pop hit "Hold on to My Love," produced by Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees. Time spent living in England during the 1980s led to collaborations with Heaven 17 and Paul Weller, the latter on a benefit cover single of "Soul Deep."
