Biography
Recognized worldwide for his achievements at the classical piano, João Carlos Assis Brasil has simultaneously pursued work as an instrumentalist and arranger in popular music. His appearances as a classical soloist commenced at age 15. Training brought him to London in England, Paris in France, and Vienna in Austria, where he earned third place at the International Beethoven Festival; those honors were followed by engagements with the Vienna Philharmonic and a European concert tour. In popular settings he has performed songs associated with his late brother, the jazz saxophonist and composer Vítor Assis Brasil, as well as pieces by Tom Jobim and his own compositions. Additional partnerships include Turíbio Santos, Clara Sverner—with whom he made instrumental piano albums devoted to Erik Satie, George Gershwin, and Maurice Ravel—Wagner Tiso, Zé Renato, Alaíde Costa, Ney Matogrosso—with whom he recorded Villa-Lobos' "Floresta do Amazonas"—Olívia Byington, and other leading artists.
