Known for his output of masses, psalms, hymns, and canticles, the Spanish composer achieved his greatest distinction when writing for double choruses that included only occasional solo passages. Within individual pieces he generated contrast by pitting a lone accompanied voice against a web of mutually responsive lines. Spirited rhythms, most often cast in triple meters, remain the defining trait of Cererols’ music. ~ Keith Johnson
