Biography
Johannes Heesters, the Dutch actor and singer born Johan Marius Nicolaas Heesters on December 5, 1903, in Amersfoort, Netherlands, enjoyed a remarkable 85-year career in professional entertainment. In 2007, at the age of 103, he may have been the oldest performer still active anywhere. He resolved to dedicate his life to the stage upon reaching his sixteenth birthday, making his theatrical debut in 1921 and entering the film industry three years after that. Initially concentrating on Viennese opera in his singing, he later incorporated more widely appealing material into his repertoire. Around 1960 he withdrew from filmmaking to focus instead on stage productions, television appearances, and recordings, continuing these activities deep into the twenty-first century in a remarkable display of longevity.
