Biography
John DeNicola built an extended, prosperous career composing songs long before audiences recognized him as a lead singer and recording performer. For the 1987 film Dirty Dancing he supplied two signature tracks to the soundtrack, "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" and "Hungry Eyes"; both numbers have since been interpreted by dozens of other artists and have continued to resonate for decades after the movie's premiere. Only in 2019 did DeNicola issue his debut solo album, The Why Because, a collection of adult-contemporary pop pieces drawn from the strongest entries in his catalog and shaped by his longstanding melodic instincts together with his articulate, seasoned vocal delivery.
Born October 4, 1955, DeNicola grew up in Amityville, New York, in a household where music was constant: his mother played piano, his father maintained a large record library, and each sibling studied an instrument. After the family relocated to Centerpoint, New York, he formed friendships with peers who shared his musical curiosity, absorbing pop, rock, soul, and psychedelia. By junior high he had mastered guitar and bass and was performing with a neighborhood rock ensemble. Later he joined the jazz-fusion outfit Flight on bass, contributing to their third album, 1980's Excursion Beyond, issued by Motown Records; one cut from that release, "Face to Face," later supplied a sample for Eryka Badu's 2003 single "Back in the Day." Additional sideman work followed with Paul Young and Corey Hart before DeNicola turned his primary attention to songwriting.
Teaming with frequent collaborator Franke Previte, he submitted demo recordings of two jointly written numbers, "Hungry Eyes" and "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," for a motion picture set in a Catskills resort during the early 1960s. From among 150 submissions, the two compositions were selected for the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. The film became a major box-office triumph, the album achieved multi-platinum status, and both songs scored substantial chart success, with "Time of My Life" reaching number one and "Hungry Eyes" peaking at number four. For the former track DeNicola and Previte received Academy Awards and Golden Globe awards.
In the years after Dirty Dancing, DeNicola sustained his songwriting activity, collaborating with John Waite, Eddie Money, and keyboardist Bernie Worrell. In 1995 he established the independent label OMAD Records, which released projects by the Sighs, Peter Lewis (ex-Moby Grape), Rust Dust, and Acoustic Junction; he also produced early recordings by Kara's Flowers, whose members later achieved wider recognition as Maroon 5. DeNicola's own recording career began after he constructed a studio inside a barn on his upstate New York property and began tracking material simply to evaluate the gear. Enjoying the process, he continued to lay down new versions of songs from his catalog, among them his Dirty Dancing compositions, while enlisting assistance from John Waite, Peter Lewis, Mickey Madden of Maroon 5, Glen Burtnick of Styx, and numerous others. The completed album, The Why Because, appeared in October 2019.
