Biography
Born in Corpus Christi, Texas and raised in Beaumont, the peace-loving rapper Johnny Cocoa channels a message of unity through a style that blends hip-hop with R&B while spotlighting his own expressive and personality-driven vocals.
Church services and internet platforms first sparked his musical curiosity, after which a friend suggested he contribute lyrics to a track. Captivated by the creative act, he retained those words, reserved studio hours, and recorded his initial effort. By 2017 he had committed fully to a professional path, issuing the polished single “Peanut Butter” under the Johnny Cocoa name.
The Taylor King-produced follow-up “Hustler’s Heart” arrived in 2018 and favored a spare, stripped-back sound. In May 2019 Epik the Dawn handled “Pink Panther” while JP Soundz produced its companion piece “Back on My Shit.”
As his catalogue expanded, so did his assurance. The April 2020 cut “Stomp” targeted club environments, whereas August’s “Thuggin’ by My Lonely” revealed a reflective side willing to expose personal frailties. Both selections figured on his debut EP To the World, a four-song set released in April 2021 that also contained “Letters from Itachi,” a piece drawn from his favorite manga Naruto. He ended the year with the autobiographical “Johnny” and opened 2022 with the Houston-recorded “Southern Slang,” a collaboration with DJ Chose.
The self-affirming single “On God” emerged as his defining release, surpassing two million streams by year’s end, earning notice from Drake, and securing a Roc Nation deal.
November 2022 brought the nine-track EP I Am Who I Am, which OG Ron C reworked into a Chopped & Screwed edition the following March. Shortly afterward Johnny Cocoa joined longtime associate Tago on the paired singles “Reach 4 the Stars” and “Tell Me What You Want.”
