Formed during the bossa nova and early Brazilian jazz era by skilled players, the Jongo Trio appeared at established bossa hotspots such as Teatro de Arena, Teatro Paramount, and Cave nightclub, while also appearing on the television program O Fino da Bossa. When Baden Powell joined them onstage, the composer honored the ensemble by writing “Feitinha Pro Poeta,” created with Lula Freire. Elis Regina and Jair Rodrigues likewise shared the stage with the trio for the production Dois Na Bossa. Their lone album under the Jongo Trio name, issued by Farroupilha in 1965, scored multiple successes through “Feitinha Pro Poeta,” Théo de Barros’s “O Menino Das Laranjas,” Marcos Valle and Paulo Sérgio Valle’s “Terra De Ninguém,” and Johnny Alf’s “Seu Chopin, Desculpe.” Although the original lineup disbanded the following year, the musicians later cut two further LPs in 1970 and 1972 under the altered title Jongo Trio e Companhia and a revised lineup featuring Toninho on drums, Claiber on bass, and Paulo Roberto on piano.
