Finland's Joona Toivanen Trio fuses meticulously crafted modern jazz with spontaneous improvisation and a melodic sensibility that often evokes pastoral landscapes. Since emerging in the late 1990s the ensemble has earned acclaim for its distinctive warmth, inventive approach, and instinctive rapport, establishing a firm presence across European stages. Following a series of self-issued recordings the group gained global attention with the 2006 release Frost on Blue Note. During the subsequent decade it became a regular presence on Italy's C.A.M. Jazz roster and marked two decades of collaboration with 2017's XX. The trio later aligned with Helsinki's forward-thinking We Jazz imprint for the exploratory Both Only in 2022 and continued the trajectory with Gravity in 2025.

Pianist Joona Toivanen and his younger sibling, bassist Tapani Toivanen, first joined forces with drummer Olavi Louhivuori during their teenage years in mid-1990s Jyväskylä, Finland. After years of local performances they issued their debut, the independent Numurkah, in 2000, revealing an early blend of unstructured improvisation alongside buoyant, formally organized pieces. A second self-released effort, 2002's Lumous, preceded their Blue Note debut Frost in 2006, by which time extensive touring throughout Europe, Asia, and Australia had broadened their reach. Their association with C.A.M. Jazz began with 2010's At My Side, leading to further refinements of the piano-trio format on 2014's November and the anniversary album XX in 2017. Both Only, issued by We Jazz in 2022, introduced a heightened experimental dimension whose atmospheric and freely improvised character reached new intensity on Gravity, which incorporated additional electronic layers and processing around the group's foundational instrumentation.
