A bassist and composer of wide-ranging interests, Joshua Crumbly crafts music that moves fluidly among post-bop, fusion, and ambient post-rock. After contributing to projects led by Terence Blanchard, Stefon Harris, and Leon Bridges, he stepped forward as a bandleader with the 2020 release Rise.

Born in Los Angeles in 1991, Crumbly received early encouragement to explore jazz from his father, saxophonist Ronnie Crumbly. He began classical piano studies at five and switched to electric bass at nine, soon appearing in school ensembles and alongside his father. Private instruction came from Al Mckibbon, John B. Williams, Reggie Hamilton, and additional mentors. Following graduation, he continued his development at New York’s Juilliard, where Terence Blanchard took notice; by the close of his freshman year Crumbly had entered the trumpeter’s quintet and participated in the 2013 Grammy-nominated album Magnetic.

Further associations have included Kamasi Washington, Lizz Wright, Stefon Harris, Ravi Coltrane, Anthony Wilson, and soul singer/songwriter Leon Bridges. With Rise, issued in 2020, Crumbly introduced his own ensemble and presented an expansive vision of contemporary creative jazz.
